This experience is the crown jewel of the outdoor day trips in Ecuador, and it’s a place most guides don’t even know about—this may be because Quito’s Secret Waterfall is not seen as a tourist attraction by the locals. However, since I lay eyes on it I knew it was a place that must be shared.
You’ll have to be prepared to walk on a trail created by the ancestors of the land, and it could be a little muddy. The hike is relatively simple, you’ll be surrounded by the most beautiful primary mountain forest, and be able to enjoy the peace of a river formed from the melted ice of Cotopaxi—which is almost as extraordinary as staring at the two hundred feet free fall of water.

Hotel Pick-up
The adventure begins at Cumbaya’s Central Plaza, where we’ll take a sedan towards the east limits of Quito. There, we’ll ride on the back of a pickup truck on an old road until we reach the path towards the waterfall.
The trail it’s of medium difficulty and it takes about an hour to complete. Most of my hikes there are a little longer—I have to slow down to appreciate the beauty. A large portion of the trail it’s through a magnetic primary forest, while we walk in the bottom of a cannon.
The temperature is warmer than Quito due to the lower altitude and surrounding nature. I had guests complete the trail with kids and velcro sandals.
We’ll meet at your hotel in Quito to start our adventure. Then we’ll drive directly toward the trail.
Enjoy a light hike on a path through a primary forest, surrounded by birds and nature, at the bottom of a canyon. You’ll quickly feel surrounded by the beauty of the unique vegetation of a one of a kind Andes tropical forest. First, take in all the fresh air on half of our hike, and reset your mind. Next, we’ll make a stop to take in the astonishing Great Waterfall, a magical place visited by the locals on Intiraymi. Time to get ready for our hike back, with a renewed energy to continue with your journey.
Due to our location, deep within the Andes, we’ll be able to enjoy fresh home grown vegetables and two dishes to choose from: local trout or home grown chicken. Vegetarian option available on request.
An unforgettable trip can’t be completed without trying the best ecuadorian ice cream recipe on our way back to your hotel.

Excellent tour. Prompt and knowledgeable
It was amazing
The waterfall is a really remarkable experience! It was hard to get there (particularly for us as ‘beginnner’ hikers) but it was absolutely worth the trip.
My boyfriend and I went on this experience on our last day in Ecuador and it was great! We had such a fabulous time with Sebastian…
Sebastian was an excellent guide. He handled navigating Quito public transit and arranging a ride to and from the waterfall parking lot.
